LA MER Development Project, Jumeirah Open Beach

The work consisted of dredging, reclamation & shore protection works involving demolition of 900,000 cubic meters and removal of 3 existing breakwaters (North, South & Central) and required construction of new rock
revetment around the new footprint of North peninsula, South peninsula and Head land. Works included removal of stabbits (approximately units of 6T)  and placement of 5 Million Tons of 3-6 Ton armour rocks, 0.3-1 ton under  layer and 1-500 kg core quarry run. Part of these removals were reused after
testing for suitability of rock to project specifications. The other elements demolished include concrete stair case, berth, quay and concrete blocks, pavement (interlock tiles and asphalt), other associated utilities and concrete
barriers.

Ahmed Bin Rashid Port Channel Dredging and Beach Reclamation Project

Burj Al Arab – Piling Works

General scope of work includes supply and installation of Steel Tubular Piles required for the new ultra-luxury beach platform unit.

Works include a total of 94 piles, diameter 914.1 mm/19mm Thick, Steel Grade X65/S355, approx. 547 tons, estimated length of 2150 meters. The scope of works included procurement, delivery, fabrication, coating, driving and PDA testing of the Piles and installation of the Pile Caps.

Works required preparation of 4 months and all 94 piles were driven in 30 day’s time.

One non-working trial pile was driven to reconfirm seabed conditions, conduct static load test and establish baseline measures for noise and vibration. Embedded lengths of pile vary from 12-13m, and coating thickness is 500 microns DFT. Pilling works will be effected using company’s own barge, crane and impact hammer.

The project is an extension of the waterfront La Mer Development at Jumeirah and includes Reclamation of 155,000 Square meter peninsula, encapsulated in a 2.0 KM breakwater to have a multi-purpose development along with a 190 berth Marina.

The works involve: Dredging from Borrow Areas, Reclamation, Soil Improvement, Breakwaters & Revetment Shore Protection Works, 1,600m of in-situ concrete crown walls, Marina Tubular Steel Piling, 500m Beach formation with Beach Groynes, and Construction of 1,200 m Block Quay Wall.

Quay Wall Installation

1,200m of Gravity Type Quay Wall constructed with 3,390 no’s mass concrete quay wall blocks.  Blocks were cast locally and transported to site, the average weight of each block being 23 Ton, a 500 Ton Crawler Crane was utilized from land with the occasional use of a super-lift for heavy corner block installations. Installation included –

  • 250m of Type 1 at a depth of -8m (DMD)
  • 900m of Type 2 at a depth of -5m (DMD)
  • 500m of Type 3 transition wall at a varied depth from -8m to -5m (DMD)

The quay wall foundation was made up of reclaimed/dredged sand, vibro compacted to a relative density of >70%. The Type 2 Quay Wall being at a depth of -5m only, allowed for overfilling, dewatering and construction in the dry, this allowed for an accelerated safe construction of this section. Type 1 & 3 was constructed traditionally with experienced dive teams and underwater equipment.

Dubai Harbour, Early works.

The Dubai Harbour Early Works Project consists of the Survey for the whole Development both topographic and bathymetric, demolition of concrete works on existing Logo Island, Demolition of Rock Structures around the island, the construction of the Causeway connecting Logo Island to DIMC area. Additional works included the re-profiling the island to new footprint using imported reclamation fill, construction of Beach Groyne and the Beach Toe.

The Dubai Harbour project is an iconic waterfront project featuring MENA regions largest marina and the Dubai Light House Hotel. The 1.9 Million Sq. M mega project will feature a 135m high Dubai Lighthouse, Cruise Liner Terminal of 14,000 sq.m capable of handling 6000 passengers, 1400 berths marina, yacht club, shopping mall, hotels, residences, and Entertainment, food and retail space.

Dubai Harbour Masterplan, Rock works subcontract.

The outline scope consists of demolition of existing rock structures in and around Logo Island and the construction of groynes and breakwater, specifically – the zone wise scope involves.

  • Zone 1 – Cruise Terminal and Light House – Shore Protection Works
  • Zone 2 – Logo Island – demolition of rock structures, construction of beach toe, and groynes and rock revetments
  • Zone 3 – Mall Area – Rock Revetments
  • Zone 4 – Marina Area – Demolition and removal of Causeway partially for areas falling outside project boundaries and rock revetments.

The project is segregated into four zones comprising of following features:

  • Zone 1 – Cruise Terminal including lighthouse, hotel and parking
  • Zone 2 – Logo Island including yacht club, helipads, residential developments and beaches (Company has executed the Early Works at the Logo Island, which included topographical and hydrographical survey for Dubai Harbour whole development, removal of concrete and rock structures, construction of the causeway, beach toe and groyne works).
  • Zone 3 – Mall including hotel, mall, parking, sports overlay, airport terminal and control tower for Dubai SkyDive.
  • Zone 4 – Marina including a yacht club, helipads and residential developments.

MIRAL is developing the National History Museum (NHM) close to the North Western corner of Saadiyat Island South of the existing Abu Dhabi Louvre.

An important part of this iconic development relates to the NHM waterfront marine works, which will also extend to cover the adjacent easement that houses a new storm water outfall, the Centre of Curiosity (COC) plot and an open space / existing utility plot (Excluded), to have an overall length of approx. 694 m.

General scope of work includes; Removal of Existing rock revetments, Dredging & Disposal, Construction of Precast Concrete Marine Wall (Quay wall), Construction on Marine Deck on Piles including: Pile Caps, Pile Plug, Precast Beams, Precast Slab, Precast Down-stand, Insitu slab on top of Board Walk.

Breakwater Works for Project Shamal Development (SPB)

Khalifa Port (approximately 24°50’N, 054°40’E) located in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi was built on a reclaimed artificial island reaching 4.5km offshore. The expansion of Khalifa Port is a key factor of Abu Dhabi Ports’ role in the economic expansion and diversification of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. Since the launch of operations in 2012, the cargo volume handled in Khalifa Port is continuously growing and its yards and berths are reaching full occupation.

In line with the 2030 Master Plan, and to keep pace with the rapidly growing operations in Khalifa Port, Abu Dhabi Ports is set to develop the next phase of Khalifa Port’s expansion to generate additional quay wall and yard area.

The Project consist of detached breakwater approximately 3.6 Kms consists of rock quarry run core, rock underlayer grade, precast concrete armour units (accropodes) seaward and rock armour 4-6 ton on leeside and the roundhead.

Horseshoe Island Northwest Breakwater Early Works (NNI)

Nurai Island is situated in the North-East of the capital and ten-minute boat ride from Saadiyat Island. Northwest Submerged breakwater is a part of new development to be build in front of Nurai Island that is called Horseshoe Island.

The project scope consists execution of the following;

Construction of  2.5 km submerged breakwater of below rock types:
